I did, and I learned getting the game to a playable state takes multiple levels of configuration. I'll outline them here so you can get right into some battle royale action. I had to go through this process because some friends of mine wanted to play Fall Guys, but outside of consoles it's only available for Windows. I could switch over to Windows, but I prefer using Linux on my PC whenever possible. I'm used to running games with Proton, but it turns out playing Fall Guys takes some special configuration, especially when you want to join a party. I read multiple guides and forum posts to figure out all of this, and I decided to compile the process into one article here for anyone else who needs to follow in my steps. * ⚓ The Register UK ☛ Game_makers,_other_small_businesses_sue_to_stop tariffs⠀⇛ Stonemaier Games founder and CEO Jamey Stegmaier told The Register that it's common among game publishers to rely on a supply chain that starts with a partner in China. Freight is then shipped to distributors and fulfillment centers around the globe, before products finally reach retailers and customers. In this article I will try to present it so as you can try it. Here’s the outline: [...] o ⚓ Torrent Freak ☛ Seekee_Browser_App_is_a_Magnet_for_Movie,_TV Show,_and_Anime_Pirates⠀⇛ Technically speaking, any modern web browser can stream pirated movies and TV shows, but some make it easier than others. The Seekee app, available on iOS and indirectly on Android, markets itself as a browser with AI capabilities and fast video streaming. The latter stands out, as pirated content is surprisingly easy to find and is organized for optimal viewing pleasure. But at what cost? o ⚓ Andre Alves Garzia ☛ RSS_doesn't_necessarily_means_firehose⠀⇛ Many feed reading apps and SaaS adopt the river of news paradigm in which news items are presented in reverse chronogical order in a list that is evergrowing. People often use the monicker firehose for this type of UX approach in which the user is flooded with content. I suspect that this became the dominant approach for feed readers as they were closely modeled against popular email clients way back when. o ⚓ Declan Chidlow ☛ The_Analytics_of_This_Site⠀⇛ I collect some anonymous analytics on my Vale.Rocks. Not because I feel the need to spy on my users every move, but rather because I quite enjoy nerding out about statistics. I love being able to see what country people are showing up from, what devices they’re using, and their browsers. Being able to see view counts tick up also helps my motivation. I also find it endlessly interesting to go have a look at where people are finding my site. Sometimes I’ll find that one of my posts has ended up in some obscure non- English newsletter, or at other times on some niche forum straight out of the last century. It’s lovely being able to go down little rabbit holes inspecting such cases and to jump into discussions across the net. I collect referrers, browsers, operating systems, screen resolutions, locations, and languages. * § Content Management Systems (CMS) / Static Site Generators (SSG)⠀➾ o ⚓ Dan Q ☛ Deprecate_React⠀⇛ My recent React experience has mostly involved Gutenberg blocks and WordPress theme component. The search is powered by Pagefind. I asked the community for feedback as I knew from reading the Pagefind docs that there may be implications for accessibility. o ⚓ Terence Eden ☛ Using_Tempest_Highlight_with_WordPress⠀⇛ I like to highlight bits of code on my blog. I was using GeSHi - but it has ceased to receive updates and the colours it uses aren't WCAG compliant. After skimming through a few options, I found Tempest Highlight. These licenses don’t just define the legal terms under which members and outsiders) can use and build on the contributions of others. They also reflect a community’s consensus on the reciprocal obligations that define it as a community. A license is a statement of values, in legally executable form, adapted for daily use. As such, a license must be designed, much as the software and hardware that open-source developers create. Sometimes an existing license is fit to purpose and can be adopted without extensive discussion. However, often the technical and social needs of a community do not precisely map onto existing licenses, or the community itself is divided about the norms a license should enforce. In these cases of breakdown, the community itself must debate and design its license, using the same social processes it uses to debate and design the other infrastructure it relies on and the final goods it creates. In this Article, we analyze four case studies of controversy over license design in open-source software and hardware ecosystems. We draw on Stewart Brand’s How Buildings Learn, a study of how physical buildings change over time as they are adapted and repurposed to deal with new circumstances by successive generations of users. Similarly, we describe how open-source licenses are adapted and repurposed by different communities confronting challenges [...] ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 512 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/04/27/Interview_about_EU_OS_Most_public_servants_have_never_used_some.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/04/27/Interview_about_EU_OS_Most_public_servants_have_never_used_some.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Interview about EU OS: ‘Most public servants have never used something else than Windows’⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Apr 27, 2025 The interview has been conducted by Jose_Pomeyrol and published originally in Spanish on MuyLinux. There have been some challenges along the way, but for the most part, I'm happy with my purchase. * ⚓ The Register UK ☛ Build_your_own_antisocial_writing_rig_with_DOS_and_a USB_key⠀⇛ But we discovered a useful loophole. In its early days, DOS ran entirely from floppy disks, which modern computers don't have any more – but the formats of those disks are still used. Any modern OS can happily read and write DOS media – including on USB storage devices. That means that pretty much any x86 PC that still supports legacy boot can boot DOS from a USB drive. When you do that, a little magic happens. The firmware (the BIOS, or UEFI with a "Compatibility Support Module" to emulate a PC BIOS) translates things for DOS. A bootable USB key suddenly looks to DOS like an ordinary hard disk, without any drivers. DOS can't read modern disk formats, and indeed struggles with any drive bigger than 2 TB, but that doesn't matter when the entire OS and a whole anthology of apps fits into a few hundred megabytes. That's less than the smallest USB thumb drive you can still buy. * ⚓ Android Police ☛ Will_repairable_phones_ever_go_mainstream?⠀⇛ Still, some companies like Fairphone, Motorola, and HMD are at the forefront of the modular smartphone movement. For instance, the Fairphone 5 lets you easily swap out components like the battery, cameras, loudspeaker, and display without professional help. However, it is only available in European countries and is unavailable in the US. * ⚓ Linus Åkesson ☛ Kaleidoscopico⠀⇛ The microcontroller is the Raspberry Pi Foundation's own RP2350 which is a relatively powerful chip. It has two processor cores that can operate either in ARM Cortex-M33 mode or RISC-V mode. Physically there are two ARM cores and two RISC-V cores side by side on the silicon, but only two of them can be enabled at the same time since they share bus connections and some of the interrupt logic. RISC-V is an open, royalty-free processor architecture, which is something I really want to encourage. On this particular chip, the RISC-V cores are less powerful than the ARM cores because there's no floating-point support, but as a demo coder I don't necessarily prefer the most powerful system. * ⚓ XDA ☛ I_installed_Linux_on_my_Nintendo_Switch,_because_why_wouldn't I?⠀⇛ The Nintendo Switch is one of the most successful game consoles of all time, and with its successor finally unveiled, it's finally time to bid farewell to the original. Or is it? Nintendo argues that you can just buy the original if the successor is too expensive, and with a massive library of fantastic games, it's not as if the Switch is suddenly irrelevant. Plus, if you pick up one of the much older original Switch units, it's really easy to install custom firmware... or Linux, I guess. In an act that can only be described as an affront to god, I've installed Ubuntu on the Nintendo Switch. "Why?" I hear you ask. "Because I can", is my response. You see, Nintendo and Nvidia left a pretty big hole in the bootROM of the original Nintendo Switch. With a little 3D-printed jig that goes into the Joy-Con rail (or you can even just use some tinfoil, if you're feeling daring, though you can damage your Switch doing that), you can boot basically anything on this device. With the Switch 2 around the corner, I broke out my original Nintendo Switch from retirement to have some fun with it one last time. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 814 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/04/27/Programming_Leftovers.1.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.tuxmachines.org/n/2025/04/27/Programming_Leftovers.1.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Programming Leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Apr 27, 2025 * ⚓ Rlang ☛ [R]_How_to_create_errorbars_with_overlaid_points_using_ggplot⠀⇛ * ⚓ Dirk Eddelbuettel ☛ Dirk_Eddelbuettel:_RcppArmadillo_14.4.2-1_on_CRAN: Another_Small_Upstream_Fix⠀⇛ widely used by (currently) 1245 other packages on CRAN, downloaded 39.4 million / vignette) by Conrad and myself has been cited 628 times according A new release arriveed at CRAN yesterday with a fix for expmat () and adjustments for clang++-20. For our purposes, the Mandelbrot set is a set of complex numbers c for which the function f(z) = z^2 + c does not diverge when iterated from z = 0. That is, for all n in the natural numbers, the absolute value of f^n(0) remains bounded. And we can color the points in the complex plane based on how quickly the sequence diverges. For example, if the sequence does not diverge, we can color the point black. If the sequence diverges, we can color the point based on the iteration count. * ⚓ Wired ☛ The_Subjective_Charms_of_Objective-C⠀⇛ Objective-C came up in the frenzied early days of the object- oriented programming era, and by all accounts, it should have never survived past it. By the 1980s, software projects had grown too large for one person, or even one team, to develop alone. To make collaboration easier, Xerox PARC computer scientist Alan Kay had created object-oriented programming—a paradigm that organized code into reusable “objects” that interact by sending each other “messages.” For instance, a programmer could build a Timer object that could receive messages like start, stop, and readTime. These objects could then be reused across different software programs. In the 1980s, excitement about object-oriented programming was so high that a new language was coming out every few months, and computer scientists argued that we were on the precipice of a “software industrial revolution.” * ⚓ GCC ☛ GCC_15.1_Released⠀⇛ Driving a leading free software project such as GCC would not be possible without support from its many contributors. More like free stuff! Businesses are about to start dumping their perfectly fine (and sometimes powerful) PCs because Windows 11 won't run on them. But Linux will. [[...] It's critical that businesses run the latest software on their devices to receive support, maintain the security of their infrastructure, and protect their users' data. Windows 11 is the most recent version of the Windows operating system, but it has some very specific hardware requirements that aren't met by many PCs businesses already own and, because of this, they have largely stuck it out with the aging Windows 10. Windows 10, however, is about to reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. This means Microsoft will stop supporting it and releasing security patches and feature updates for the operating system, unless you pay an incredibly steep fee for extended security updates (at a price that most will balk at). It's estimated that over 240 million PCs will be rendered obsolete on this date. Obsolete, that is, for Windows use. Linux will keep them working for years to come for media and creative work, hosting servers, and even gaming.
