After a couple of years in the incubator through the Steam Deck, SteamOS has gone from Steam’s Big Picture mode with a Linux distro taped on the back to a compelling destination for PC gamers across both handhelds and desktops. But Valve’s work isn’t done. Windows 11 is by far the most popular destination for PC gaming, but that’s despite a long (and constantly growing) list of issues with the OS. When Valve releases SteamOS into beta in April, it has a shot to finally push Linux gaming into the mainstream if it makes a few critical changes. It creates a layer between the language and the database, helping programmers work with data without the OOP paradigm. Compared to traditional techniques of exchange between an object-oriented language and a relational database, ORM often reduces the amount of code that needs to be written. It standardizes interfaces reducing boilerplate and speeding development time. Advocates of ORMs claim they increase productivity, improve application design, reuse code and maintain the application over time. On the other hand, ORM suffers the disadvantage of the abstraction obscuring what’s happening in the code. And over-use of ORM software can produce poorly designed databases. Here’s our verdict summarised in a legendary ratings chart. Only free and open source software is eligible for inclusion. * ⚓ TVHplayer_-_desktop_IPTV_player_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ TVHplayer is a desktop client for playback and recording live TV with TVheadend. A good package manager makes installation of many Linux programs simple with the package manager handling a program’s dependencies. But distros’ package managers rarely include any AI apps. Installing AI apps in Linux is often a non-trivial experience. For each program in our Machine Learning series I usually devote a section with instructions how to install the AI app. There is another option which was suggested to me by ismail, a visitor to our site. The app is called Pinokio. Pinokio describes itself as a browser that lets you install, run, and manage any server application, on your local machine. These applications are AI software. Pinokio is not a browser in the traditional sense. It’s free and open source software. * ⚓ dug_-_global_DNS_propagation_checker_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ dug is billed as a powerful global DNS propagation checker that can output in a variety of formats. Suhy — The FSF submitted its amicus brief in response to a pleading entitled "Appellees' Opposition to Motion for Leave to File Amicus Curiae Brief by Software Freedom Conservancy, Inc. (SFC) in Support of Defendants-Appellants" (the "Opposition"), in which Neo4j asked the Court of Appeals not to consider an amicus brief submitted by the SFC, which eloquently sought to point out the errors of the District Court in interpreting the GNU AGPLv3, Section 7. "As our amicus brief explains, the FSF previously pushed Neo4j to correct their abuse of the AGPL," said Zoë Kooyman, executive director of the FSF. "Their misstatements and baseless arguments in their opposition have now compelled the FSF to step in again, to set the record straight regarding the FSF and its intent in drafting the GNU licenses -- to ensure the protection of software freedom." Kooyman notes that the FSF's FAQ "Can I modify the GPL and make a modified license?" outlines the steps required to make modified versions of the GNU GPL, including removing specific sections of the license text and removing any references to its marks. These steps avoid confusing users of the GNU AGPLv3 and the FSF's trademarks included in it. Because the GNU licenses have free software's philosophy implicitly and explicitly ingrained in them, adding restrictions to a GNU license without using good general licensing practice as outlined in the FSF's FAQ results in an unauthorized derivative of the license. Read_on Fudzilla: * ⚓ Court_could_shoot_GNU⠀⇛ Database company Neo4j is attempting to convince the US legal system that "open source" means whatever they want it to mean. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is poised to review a California district court's ruling in Neo4j v. PureThink, a case that could redefine the eessence of open-source software. Neo4j, not content with the standard GNU Affero General Public License version 3 (AGPLv3), sprinkled its secret sauce into the mix and modified the AGPLv3 with additional terms, effectively saying, "Sure, it's open source, but only on our terms." This creative interpretation led to legal skirmishes over forks of its software, with Neo4j arguing that their bespoke restrictions couldn't be removed to revert to the standard AGPLv3. PureThink’s John Mark Suhy decided that enough was enough and that "open source" should mean what it says on the tin. Suhy is now defending the principles of free and open-source software (FOSS) on his own, without the Free Software Foundation's (FSF) backing. ⠀⢠⣦⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⠔⠒⢂⣩⠭⠝⠛⠛⠛⠃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⠛⠛⠀⣿⠛⢷⡄⢸⡟⠛⠃⢸⡟⠛⠃⠀⠀⢠⡞⠛⠀⢠⡞⠛⢳⡄⢸⡟⠛⠛⠘⠛⣿⠛⠃⢷⠀⣸⡆⢠⡟⠀⣼⡆⠀⢸⡟⠛⣦⠀⣿⠛⠛ ⣀⣠⣿⣀⣀⣠⡏⠀⠠⣊⣥⢤⣤⣀⣤⣀⣀⣀⣀⣀⡀⠀⠀⠀⡿⠛⠃⠀⣿⠻⣏⠀⢸⡟⠛⠀⢸⡟⠛⠀⠀⠀⠀⠙⢷⡄⢸⡀⠀⢸⡇⢸⡟⠛⠀⠀⠀⣿⠀⠀⠘⣧⡏⢻⣾⠁⣰⣏⣿⡄⢸⡟⢿⡁⠀⣿⠛⠃ ⠛⠛⡟⠛⠛⠛⠓⠶⠆⠀⠀⠀⢸⡿⣿⠛⠛⠛⠛⠛⠃⠀⠀⠀⠃⠀⠀⠀⠛⠀⠘⠃⠘⠓⠒⠂⠘⠓⠒⠂⠀⠀⠐⠳⠞⠁⠈⠛⠖⠋⠀⠘⠃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠛⠀⠀⠀⠙⠀⠈⠃⠐⠛⠀⠈⠓⠘⠃⠀⠛⠀⠛⠒⠒ ⠀⠀⡇⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣀⣤⣶⠟⠃⣿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠆⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡤⠤⠀⠀⠀⢀⠤⡀⠀⠀⠀⢠⠀⡄⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⡄⠀⠀⠀⠠⢤⡀⠀⠀⠀⢀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠤⡤⠄⠀⠀⠀⡄⠀⠀⠀⢀⠤⡀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⡄ ⠀⠀⠓⠒⠒⠒⠚⠛⠋⠉⠁⠀⠀⠀⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡏⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣀⡔⠀⠀⠀⢸⣀⡇⠀⠀⠀⠸⠑⡇⠀⠀⠀⢀⣠⠇⠀⠀⠀⡼⢵⠀⠀⠀⠀⡇⠀⠀⠀⠀⡇⠀⠀⠀⢣⣀⡄⠀⠀⠀⠸⠑⡇ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 656 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/03/04/Games_Scarlet_Hollow_Secret_Mode_MechLock_and_More.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/03/04/Games_Scarlet_Hollow_Secret_Mode_MechLock_and_More.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Games: Scarlet Hollow, Secret Mode, MechLock, and More⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Mar 04, 2025 * ⚓ GamingOnLinux ☛ Scarlet_Hollow_-_The_Roads_Untraveled_update_out_now, first_episode_free_in_the_demo⠀⇛ Scarlet Hollow is an award-winning gothic horror narrative adventure developed by Black Tabby Games (who also made Slay the Princess). I don't think that these are necessarily problems, but they're perhaps opportunities to improve educational materials. * ⚓ University of Toronto ☛ Updating_local_commits_with_more_changes_in_Git (the_harder_way)⠀⇛ One of the things I do with Git is maintain personal changes locally on top of the upstream version, with my changes updated via rebasing every time I pull upstream to update it. In the simple case, I have only a single local change and commit, but in more complex cases I split my changes into multiple local commits; my local version of Firefox currently carries 12 separate personal commits. Every so often, upstream changes something that causes one of those personal changes to need an update, without actually breaking the rebase of that change. When this happens I need to update my local commit with more changes, and often it's not the 'top' local commit (which can be updated simply). * ⚓ Rlang ☛ Best_Before_Dates_by_Bass⠀⇛ This is a graph of the percentage of Stack Overflow questions tagged with data science terms such as R, Pandas, and so on. It seems to show exploding interest in R and Pandas, and maybe even Tensorflow. Pandas was likely chosen as a proxy for interest in Python for data science (versus a general interest in Python). I’d prefer view counts over question percentages as a proxy of interest, but it is what it is. * ⚓ Rlang ☛ A_Bayesian_proportional_hazards_model_with_a_penalized_spline⠀⇛ In my previous post, I outlined a Bayesian approach to proportional hazards modeling. This post serves as an addendum, providing code to incorporate a spline to model a time-varying hazard ratio non linearly. In a second addendum to come I will present a separate model with a site-specific random effect, essential for a cluster-randomized trial. These components lay the groundwork for analyzing a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial, where both splines and site-specific random effects will be integrated into a single model. I plan on describing this comprehensive model in a final post. * ⚓ Initial Commit ☛ I_struggled_with_Git,_so_I'm_making_a_game_to_spare others_the_pain⠀⇛ I wondered whether there was a variation or enhanced version of Git-Sim that could be more broadly applicable to coders of all skill levels - even total newbies - AND be even more immersive and intuitive than Git-Sim. Many popular apps, such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and Steam, have native Linux clients and are available through distribution package managers like APT or DNF. These managers ensure that users can easily install the latest software while active community contributions continuously increase the availability of native Linux applications. Furthermore, containerization technologies such as Flatpak and Snap have simplified the process for developers to package their applications once and deploy them universally.
