In 2004, the idea of releasing an operating system every six months was laughed off by many, but has now become the norm. Ubuntu builds upon Debian, aiming to bring the latest and very best open source had to offer to the masses. In the past 10 years, we’ve seen huge shifts in the way software is delivered - the success of large-scale cloud based operations necessitated a shift towards more automated testing, releasing and monitoring, and as the open source community around these projects grew, we had to evolve our ways of thinking, designing and communicating about software. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 320 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/02/12/Chief_Open_Source_Officer_You_asked_I_m_delivering.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/02/12/Chief_Open_Source_Officer_You_asked_I_m_delivering.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Chief Open Source Officer - You asked, I'm delivering!⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Feb 12, 2025 I am really pleased to announce that the 1st run of the executive level program called “Chief Open Source Officer” will be held in April 2025. We all know that open source software, hardware, data and methods is the baseline of how the world today benefits in all industries, governments, academia, NGOs, global NGOs, and the civil society. We also recognize that not all of those in positions of decision making have a background in technology, let alone open source technologies and the norms and values that made open source so successful. We should update mental models of who works on open source accordingly, and build or modify power structures to be more resilient to corporate capture. The goal of this article is to make clear that the large scale engagement of corporations in open source has happened and is continuing to happen, that it is fueled by natural incentives, and that it must be treated seriously because it is having and will continue to have negative consequences even if every individual involved is participating in good faith. Additionally, I want to remove from this topic the ethical angle which so often comes to dominate discussions of open source. It’s not that ethics aren’t important (ethics are extremely important) but that ethical entreaties to corporations or open source participants are ineffective when the underlying incentives and the mechanisms of hard and soft power do not change. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 646 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/02/12/Games_MangoHud_Isle_Goblin_and_More.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/02/12/Games_MangoHud_Isle_Goblin_and_More.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Games: MangoHud, Isle Goblin, and More⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Feb 12, 2025 * ⚓ GamingOnLinux ☛ Keep_Driving_is_a_refreshing_road_trip_management_RPG⠀⇛ A road trip RPG that blends in some inventory management and unique turn-based battles that has you fight off everything on the road from tractors to abandoned suitcases, Keep Driving is a charming and clever game worth your time. One of the main differences between v3 and its v2 predecessor is that the new UI is written in WebAssembly (WASM) using Go. At first glance, this might seem an odd choice - Go typically isn't the first language you think of when deciding to program a Web UI - but we had good reasons. In this blog post, I'll explain why we chose WebAssembly, some of our implementation challenges (and how we worked around them), and the results. * § Rust⠀➾ o ⚓ Diziet ☛ Ian_Jackson:_derive-deftly_1.0.0_-_Rust_derive_macros, the_easy_way⠀⇛ derive-deftly 1.0 is released. derive-deftly is a template-based derive-macro facility for Rust. It has been a great success. Your codebase may benefit from it too! Rust programmers will appreciate its power, flexibility, and consistency, compared to macro_rules; and its convenience and simplicity, compared to proc macros. Programmers coming to Rust from scripting languages will appreciate derive-deftly’s convenient automatic code generation, which works as a kind of compile-time introspection. * § Standards/Consortia⠀➾ o ⚓ Linuxiac ☛ FLAC_1.5_Debuts_with_Long-Awaited_Multithreaded Encoding⠀⇛ Before that, here’s a quick explanation for anyone who might not be familiar with this – FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a type of audio file format that keeps music and sounds in high quality without losing any details. Unlike MP3, which compresses audio by removing some data, FLAC keeps everything intact while still reducing the file size. As you can expect, this makes it perfect for people who want top-notch sound quality, like audiophiles or musicians. Plus, FLAC files can be played on many devices and converted to other formats if needed. This is where the thieves first steal victims' files, then encrypt the stolen data, and threaten to leak or sell it if the victim doesn't pay a ransom demand. Instead, files are encrypted, and payment is demanded to provide a means for unscrambling that data, the old school way. The Microsoft Windows malware used in these infections has included Phobos, LokiLocker, and RCRU64, which are all leased to criminal groups under a ransomware-as-a- service model (RaaS) – but aren't the more popular brands like RansomHub and Lockbit, typically seen in recent intrusions. o ⚓ Google ☛ Cybercrime:_A_Multifaceted_National_Security_Threat⠀⇛ Cybercrime makes up a majority of the malicious activity online and occupies the majority of defenders' resources. In 2024, Mandiant Consulting responded to almost four times more intrusions conducted by financially motivated actors than state-backed intrusions. Despite this overwhelming volume, cybercrime receives much less attention from national security practitioners than the threat from state-backed groups. While the threat from state-backed hacking is rightly understood to be severe, it should not be evaluated in isolation from financially motivated intrusions. o ⚓ IT Wire ☛ iTWire_-_How_to_outsmart_ransomware_and_build resilience_within_your_organisation⠀⇛ For example, LockBit 3.0 uses a triple extortion strategy, demanding a ransom for encrypted data while also threatening to release sensitive information and further disrupt operations if the ransom is not paid. Jason Whyte, general manager for Asia Pacific, Trustwave, said, "Attackers are no longer relying on a single approach; they’re using a combination of strategies, including phishing and exploiting software vulnerabilities. This makes it increasingly difficult for organisations to keep up, as they're dealing with highly organised, sophisticated threat actor groups that are continuously innovating and exploring new weaknesses to exploit." o ⚓ The Record ☛ 8Base_ransomware_site_taken_down_as_Thai_authorities arrest_4_connected_to_operation⠀⇛ The leak site for the 8Base ransomware gang was taken down Monday and replaced with a banner by multiple law enforcement agencies.
