for purchase these days. But finding one with the precise features you want can be trickier – so Byran Huang decided to design one from scratch using a combination of readily available components (like a processor module, display, and mechanical keyboard) and custom designs for parts like a mainboard and chassis. The resulting laptop is called anyon_e, and it’s a laptop with a 4K AMOLED display, a custom aluminum chassis, about 7 hours of battery life, and an ARM- based processor that’s powerful enough for basic computing and even some light gaming. Today is no exception. In the past the emulator used breakpoints to detect when calls to the system BIOS, or BDOS, were made. That was possible because the BIOS and BDOS entry points are at predictable locations. For example a well-behaved program might make a system call with code like this: [...] * ⚓ Sebastian Mihai ☛ Snowdrop_OS_-_my_operating_system_from_scratch,_in assembly_language⠀⇛ Snowdrop OS was born of my childhood curiosity around what happens when a PC is turned on, the mysteries of bootable disks, and the hidden aspects of operating systems. It is a live ISO that can run from a CD or Drive, without the need to install. It is based on Devuan. Dynebolic is designed to run on computers with extremely low ressources (dynebolic III was benchmarked at Pentium2 processors with 256MB RAM). It can even run in ram: not even a harddisk is required. Dynebolic “introduces a new user experience organized as different journeys into creativity, that we call workflows. Our desktop adopts KDE 5 Plasma and its “Activities” to provide pre-sets for five specific workflows: Streaming, Audio, Video, Graphics, Publishing. Each activity is easily reached from the desktop panel or via keyboard shortcuts and offers everything needed for each workflow, while excluding the noise of other workflows, without compromising on access. For reference, during the same time, there were 112 games released for backdoored Windows on Steam, so the GNU/Linux versions represent about 13.4 % of total released titles. This week you can really feel that the holiday season is over, and there are now a bunch of great titles coming out, such as Takara Cards if you are into Deck builder games. Here’s a quick pick of the most interesting titles from the past week: * ⚓ Boiling Steam ☛ The_Nvidia_Way:_A_Good_Book,_Yet_Fairly_Selective⠀⇛ At the end of 2024 a new book called The Nvidia Way by Tae Kim came out. Since I had a bit of a break for the holidays, I read it from start to finish. It’s a decent book, but there are quite a few flaws that I want to highlight, being very familiar with the same era as well. But let’s start by the good bits. * ⚓ HowTo Geek ☛ 10_Non-Steam_Apps_You_Should_Install_on_Your_Steam_Deck Right_Away⠀⇛ Make your Steam Deck even better. The Steam Deck OLED and Steam Deck LCD aren't technically the best handhelds, hardware-wise, but the tight integration of SteamOS makes it a more enjoyable experience than using Windows-based devices. Every time we review another PC gaming handheld, regardless of how good the hardware is, we end up wishing it didn't have to run Windows 11, and now our wish has been granted. So, with expectations high, what should you play on SteamOS 3 once the beta lets you use it on other handhelds? Well, instead of picking the usual crop of handheld titles, I decided to put a list together of games that run better on SteamOS compared to Windows. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 724 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/01/26/Games_The_Last_of_Us_Part_War_Thunder_FF7_Rebirth.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/01/26/Games_The_Last_of_Us_Part_War_Thunder_FF7_Rebirth.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Games: The Last of Us Part, War Thunder, FF7 Rebirth⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Jan 26, 2025 * ⚓ GamingOnLinux ☛ The_Last_of_Us_Part_I_added_AMD_FSR3.1_Frame_Generation and_Super_Resolution⠀⇛ For those interested in maximising game performance on Linux / Steam Deck, The Last of Us Part I just got another major tech upgrade. v1.1.4 released January 24th, further enhancing the graphical options available. * ⚓ GamingOnLinux ☛ War_Thunder_gets_BattlEye_anti-cheat_enabled_for Linux⠀⇛ War Thunder from Gaijin Entertainment announced back in December 2024 that they would be changing the anti-cheat, which continues to be rolled out in stages. I was very impressed. A 2025 AAA game, running great on the Steam Deck out of the box?! Of course, that would mean the game runs at the lowest settings, but still! Don’t get your hopes up. It’s actually a disaster, and Valve is completely to blame for the rating that’s basically false advertising at this stage. The default settings (that should be the basis for the rating) barely get you to 30 FPS, and you get massive frame rate drops the whole time, and blurry cinematics galore. There’s already enough videos about this, here’s one that goes into the details of the awful performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5Tuc2z34Bo This is sad that Valve keeps destroying their credibility over and over again. You’d think they would learn - after the disaster that was the Verified rating for the Last of Us Remake when it came out, suffering from a very similar set of problems: hardly able to stay at 30 FPS without degrading completely the graphics settings. Not sure if the port has improved significantly since then, but the rating should be set on their current status, not on a promise of future performance fix. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 790 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/01/26/GNU_Linux_on_Old_and_New_PCs.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2025/01/26/GNU_Linux_on_Old_and_New_PCs.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ GNU/Linux on Old (and New) PCs⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Jan 26, 2025 * ⚓ XDA ☛ 7_uses_for_old_laptops_you’ve_probably_never_considered⠀⇛ When you get a shiny new powerful laptop, you might set your old one aside to gather dust or send it to the manufacturer for recycling.
