Or, well, actually someone else's 3D printer did: It turns out that building a realtime system (with high-speed motors controlling to a 300-degree metal rod) by cobbling together a bunch of Python and JavaScript on an anemic Arm SoC with zero resource isolation doesn't always meet those realtime guarantees. So in particular after installing a bunch of plugins, people would report the infamous “MCU timer too close” Klipper error, which essentially means that the microcontroller didn't get new commands in time from the GNU/Linux host and shut down as a failsafe. (Understandably, this sucks if it happens in the middle of an eight-hour print. Nobody really invented a way to reliably resume from these things yet.) For centuries, many cultures have used heated tables for thermal comfort in cold weather. Examples are the “kotatsu” in Japan, the “korsi” in the Middle East, and the “brasero de picon” in Spain. A heat source goes under a table, a blanket goes over it, and people slide their legs underneath. The micro-climate under the blanket keeps you comfortable, even though the space in which you find yourself is cold. The heated table is an excellent example of our ancestors’ energy-efficient way of warming: heating_people,_not_spaces. Historically, glowing charcoal from the fireplace heated the space under the table. While that provided sufficient warmth, it also carried a significant risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Nowadays, we can use electric heating technology instead. For example, the Japanese kotatsu is still in use, but it’s now working with a small electric heater fixed under the table surface. In this manual, I will walk you through the making of an electrically heated work desk for one person. I have built the table for myself in the co-working space in Barcelona where I have my office now. The building, an old industrial warehouse, has very high ceilings, no insulation, and little sun in winter. It can get very cold here and conventional heating systems don’t work. My heated table turns out to be a perfect solution. I can power it with a solar panel, a wind turbine, a bike generator, or a battery. YAIOUOM was an example of a refinement type system, i.e. a type system that does its work after another type system has already done its work. It was purely static, users could add new units in about one line of code, and it was actually surprisingly easy to write. It also couldn’t be written within the Rust type system, in part because I wanted legible error messages, and in part because Rust doesn’t offer a very good way to specify that (m / s) * s is actually the same type as m. Sadly, it also worked only on a specific version of Rust Nightly, and the code broke down with every new version of Rust. It’s a shame, because I believe that there’s lots we could do with refinement types. Simple things such as units of measure, as above, but also, I suspect, we could achieve much better error messages for complex type-level programming, such as what Diesel is doing. The devs note that the experimental Wayland session in Xfce 4.20 is blocked in siduction 2024.1.0 as it doesn’t start. It manages windows and nothing else. Here's why it's worth a try. § What Is a Window Manager? A window manager is a program that does just that, managing window behavior in the X Window System. The X Window System, or X, isn't a complete graphical user interface system in itself. It really only knows how to paint the pixels on the screen.
