Happily for Raspberry Pi 5 owners the Pi engineers have come up with a set of tweaks you don’t have to be an overclocker to benefit from, working on the DRAM timings to extract a healthy speed boost. Serial Pi hacker [Jeff Geerling] has tested them and thinks they should be good for as much as 20% boost on a stock board. I also think that the concepts popularised by Rust, such as the borrow checker, will stick around in computing for many years to come and I’d like to have more hands-on experience with that. The Rust language also encourages the ideas of safety and soundness - sound code is (approximately) code that can’t cause memory corruption or exhibit undefined behaviour. You can read more in this excellent post Safety and Soundness in Rust. Beyond its immediate target, its implications are far-reaching, modernizing cyber warfare and raising critical questions about ethics, national security, and global governance. Stuxnet was a masterwork in technology in contrast to earlier cyberattacks. Stuxnet was revolutionary because of its sophistication and precision, proving that cyber weapons could cause genuine harm in the physical world by moving beyond the digital domain. This established a new standard for cyberattacks by demonstrating the potential for state-sponsored operations to achieve premeditated goals without using traditional military means. * § Confidentiality⠀➾ o ⚓ Unmitigated Risk ☛ Government_CAs_and_the_WebPKI:_Trust_is_Often the_Opposite_of_Security⠀⇛ Following my recent post about another CA failing the “Turing test” with a likely MITM certificate issuance, let’s examine a troubling pattern: the role of government-run and government-affiliated CAs in the WebPKI ecosystem. Recently, Google announced new “Page Annotations” within the Google app on iOS. This feature, as Google explains, “extracts interesting entities from the webpage and highlights them in line.” Effectively, it creates links on a website that you’ve opened through Google’s browser that the website’s owner did not put there. The links, when clicked, then perform a search on Google for that subject and open the search in a pop-up window on top of the third-party website. # ⚓ [Old] EFF ☛ CALEA⠀⇛ EFF and a coalition of public interest, industry, and academic groups filed suit in 2005 challenging the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) unjustified expansion of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). By forcing broadband Internet and interconnected voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services to become wiretap-friendly, the FCC ignored CALEA's plain language and threatened privacy, security, and innovation. Congress passed the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) in 1994 to make it easier for law enforcement to wiretap digital telephone networks. CALEA forced telephone companies to redesign their network architectures to make wiretapping easier. It expressly did not regulate data traveling over the Internet. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1943 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/12/03/Security_Lefttovers.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/12/03/Security_Lefttovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Security Lefttovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Dec 03, 2024 * ⚓ SANS ☛ Credential_Guard_and_Kerberos_delegation,_(Mon,_Dec_2nd)⠀⇛ The vast majority of red team exercises that I (and my team, of course) have been doing lately are assumed breach scenarios. * ⚓ Lee Yingtong Li ☛ Investigating_a_proprietary_Android_2FA_system⠀⇛ This article concerns an Android app used as part of a proprietary two-factor authentication (2FA) system. Investigation of the app and 2FA protocol reveals some interesting design decisions. § Overview The 2FA system is similar to well-known offerings such as Duo Security and Okta_Verify. When a user initiates a request (e.g. log in request), a push notification is delivered to the 2FA device. The user can then approve or reject the request, and the outcome is directly transmitted to the server. Therefore, the 2FA system is an interactive online protocol requiring internet connectivity to function, rather than an offline protocol like TOTP or HOTP. The developer of the 2FA system advertises that the system is superior to other 2FA protocols, due to the use of cryptographic features – described as a ‘signature’ – that enable the server to determine not only that the user has approved a request, but also to verify that the user has approved the specific details of that particular request. As we will see, there are some interesting hidden details behind this description. § QR code message signing Like many similar 2FA apps, the app is initialised by the user scanning a QR code on their mobile device. * ⚓ Scoop News Group ☛ Small_number_of_vulnerabilities_patched_in_last Android_security_update_of_2024⠀⇛ None of the patched bugs were considered critical. * ⚓ Bruce Schneier ☛ Details_about_the_iOS_Inactivity_Reboot_Feature⠀⇛ I recently wrote_about the new iOS feature that forces an iPhone to reboot after it’s been inactive for a longish period of time. For example, consider a scenario where you search for “coffee” in a search engine. If the search engine computes a relevance score of all documents to the term “coffee”, the server will be doing a lot of extra work. In a world increasingly reliant on software, the answer to this question is more crucial than ever and has profound implications for our freedom. Imagine a world where every piece of software you use comes with strings attached. You may be forbidden from using it however you want, from studying, changing, or sharing it, from any combination of those things, or even all at once. Your software controls you, not the other way around. Enter the GNU General Public License (GPL), a cornerstone of the free software movement. This dystopian scenario is precisely what the GPL seeks to prevent. The idea behind copyleft comes from Richard Stallman. The GPL provides a legal framework to require that software remains free to use, study, change, and share-not just for ourselves but for everyone. It's a powerful legal safeguard for software freedom.
