is a specialized Linux distribution, aimed at providing a suite of tools for content creators. It isn't the only one, either. Ubuntu Studio and Fedora Jam are similar distributions aimed at providing creative toolsets. That’s not to say they are exactly the same. Ubuntu Studio, for example, takes the broadest aim, with tools that are equally useful whether you’re working on images, video, or audio. As the name implies, Fedora Jam is focused more directly on music production. Similarly, the name AV Linux should give you a decent idea of what the distribution’s strengths are. Unlike the other two distributions above, it isn’t a spinoff of another distribution, not directly anyway. AV Linux is built on top of MX Linux, which itself is based on Debian. Even so, AV Linux isn’t an officially recognized variant of MX Linux. And it couldn’t be otherwise, given that just yesterday, I published almost the same news, with the same concept behind it, about a new distribution using the same under-the-hood technologies. Namely, about the KDE developers’ project to create their distribution called (well, are you surprised) KDE Linux. Now, we’re seeing a similar idea emerge, but this time, it is about the other leading desktop environment (come on, System76, give us COSMIC finally), GNOME. As you’ll see in the following lines, this “coincidence” is anything but random. But let’s start a little further. I’m flabbergasted. I would never have thought it possible that a guy who dominated Linux news coverage from 2003 until 2007 — and whose actions at first scared the bejesus out of us whether we’d admit it or not — could be dead and buried for something like forever (in news cycle terms, at least) without coverage from the FOSS press. McBride, who back in the early aughts was CEO of Utah-based SCO, is famous for trying to bring an end to Linux as we know it by taking on IBM, Daimler Chrysler, Novell, and many other corporations, in legal battles with the claim that Linux was filled with code that had been purloined from SCO’s proprietary versions of Unix. Today I found out, from a short blurb that Techrights published on October 31, that McBride’s been dead since September 16. Techrights updated its notice this morning to include a copy-and-paste of a post, also made today, from the people-powered news aggregator site SoylentNews by a user with the handle Frosty Piss... But how do you preserve all those documents that used to come on paper, records, correspondence and certificates? How will you or your successors be able to retrieve them in ten or thirty years time? This brief article considers how you should archive them safely, which isn’t the same as backing them up. By archiving, I mean putting precious files somewhere they can be retrieved in at least ten years time. They may include financial, business, employment and personal records, as well as all finished work that you want to record for posterity. For most, they’ll also include a careful selection of still images, movies, and the more important documents you might create, such as books, theses and papers. They’re what you and the law want you to keep in perpetuity, and to be able to retrieve even after you’re gone. To see how this can be achieved, I consider: the storage medium to be used, file formats that will be retrievable, how to index them for access, physical storage conditions, and the checks of their integrity that are needed. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1493 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/11/03/today_s_leftovers.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/11/03/today_s_leftovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ today's leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Nov 03, 2024 * § Open Hardware/Modding⠀➾ o ⚓ Zephyr_RTOS_Receives_Support_from_Ambiq⠀⇛ Ambiq is increasing its support for the Zephyr Project Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). "Introducing Zephyr embedded developers to Ambiq’s low power solutions dramatically expands their toolkit for creating higher performing and more energy efficient edge devices.” * § SUSE/OpenSUSE⠀➾ o ⚓ Dominique Leuenberger ☛ Tumbleweed_–_Review_of_the_week_2024/44⠀⇛ Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers, Week 44 ended quickly, as Friday was a public holiday where I live. To not keep you wondering forever what happened this week, I took the time to write up the review of the week. Luckily, the stagings seemed to pass rather ‘on their own’ without much hand-holding, making things easier. We have published seven snapshots (1024, 1025, 1027, 1028, 1029, 1030, and 1031) since the last weekly review post. * § Audiocasts/Shows⠀➾ o ⚓ mintCast Podcast ☛ mintCast_449_–_3D_Podcasting⠀⇛ First up in the news: Ubuntu 25.04 gets perfect name, WinAmp deletes entire Microsoft's proprietary prison Microsoft's proprietary prison GitHub code, Ubuntu 24.10 released for Snapdragon X Elite, Arm cancels Qualcomm’s architecture license, Paranoia and Fear inhabit Automattic, Internet Archive breached again, Rand removal of Russian coders spurs debate about Linux kernel’s politics ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1565 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/11/03/Touchegg_Linux_multi_touch_gesture_recognizer.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/11/03/Touchegg_Linux_multi_touch_gesture_recognizer.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Touchégg – Linux multi-touch gesture recognizer⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Rianne Schestowitz on Nov 03, 2024 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇laptop⦈_ Quoting: Touchégg - Linux multi-touch gesture recognizer - LinuxLinks — Touchégg is a program that runs in the background and transform the gestures you make on your touchpad or touchscreen into visible actions in your desktop. The program recognizes gestures, translates them to more conventional types of events and/or performs custom actions in response to them. For example, you can swipe up with 3 fingers to maximize a window or swipe left with 4 finger to switch to the next desktop. Many more actions and gestures are available and everything is easily configurable. The program relies on libinput, a library that provides a full input stack for display servers and other applications that need to handle input devices provided by the kernel. libinput provides device detection, event handling and abstraction so minimize the amount of custom input code the user of libinput need to provide the common set of functionality that users expect. Input event processing includes scaling touch coordinates, generating relative pointer events from touchpads, pointer acceleration, etc. Note that Touchégg only works with X11; there is no support for Wayland.
