We’re talking about the command line, that venerable human-computer interface that’s been around for over fifty years and still isn’t going anywhere soon. Even in today’s world of swish graphical interfaces and touch-screen convenience, there’s a place for the command line. Back when Unix was developed in the late 1960s and very early 1970s, there was no such thing as a graphical user interface (GUI), nor a desktop environment (DE). Typing was the only game in town. If you wanted to interact with a computer, you used a keyboard, and you didn’t think twice about it. This had design implications. Because you were limited to typing, every aspect of the computer’s configuration, operation, and administration had to be controllable by typing commands. That was true of Unix over half a century ago, and it’s still true of Linux today. You can do anything from the command line. Nothing is beyond your reach. Today, at its core, Linux is still a keyboard-driven operating system. You can have a complete Linux system running without a desktop environment, and many servers are used in that way. On the desktop, of course, most users have a DE. Pastebins developed in the late 1990s to support IRC chatrooms dedicated to computing, where users naturally need to share large blocks of computer input or output in a line-oriented medium Pastebins are popular with developers for a number of reasons including support for syntax highlighting, temporary storage, ease of use, as well as anonymity. They can also store configuration information. It’s worth noting that pastebins are not only useful for developers. Anyone can use a pastebin to paste and share any type of text. This article focuses on the finest self-hosted pastebin tools. The power-profiles-daemon project was created to help provide a solution for two separate use cases, for desktops, laptops, and other devices running a “traditional Linux desktop”. The first one is a “Low Power” mode, that users could toggle themselves, or have the system toggle for them, with the intent to save battery. Mobile devices running iOS and Android have had a similar feature available to end-users and application developers alike. The second use case was to allow a “Performance” mode on systems where the hardware maker would provide and design such a mode. The idea is that the Linux kernel would provide a way to access this mode which usually only exists as a configuration option in some machines’ “UEFI Setup” screen. But don’t worry—most Jellyfin clients will continue working smoothly without any forced upgrades—except for Jellyfin4Kodi, which currently faces some issues. Luckily, a fix is coming, so hang tight if you use that client. Another significant change is the deprecation of Raspberry Pi V4L2 hardware transcoding support. Additionally, Jellyfin is starting to phase out 32-bit ARM support, with the goal of fully removing it in the upcoming 10.11 release. This means it’s time to consider upgrading your hardware if you’re still running Jellyfin on older, slow ARM devices. If sshd winds up doing password based authentication at all, it will run your full PAM stack and that will challenge people for MFA. So you must implement sometimes skipping your MFA module in PAM itself. Fortunately there is a PAM module we can use for this, pam_access. * ⚓ Rob Knight ☛ Copy_SSH_Keys_to_a_Server⠀⇛ Every time I've setup a server in the past decade the SSH keys have been set for me, most hosts I've used do this (DigitalOcean, Hetzner, etc). At the time of measurement, only 1 in 10,000 domains used SSHFP records and less than 50% used a correct configuration. * ⚓ Ubuntubuzz ☛ How_To_Use_Tab_Session_Manager_on_Firefox_Browser⠀⇛ This tutorial will help you use Tab Session Manager easily with examples. My main focus has been getting the public_transport client_library used by KDE_Itinerary ready for MOTIS_v2, as Transitous, our community-run public transport routing service, will switch to that in the not too distant future. One big new feature in MOTIS v2 is support for GTFS shapes. That is, getting detailed paths for public transport sections, beyond just positions of intermediate stops, which allows for a much more useful map display for example. Even more importantly, MOTIS now also provides detailed multi-floor paths for transfers or other parts of a trip where you have to move yourself (walking, biking, etc). This is all based on OSM data and thus matches perfectly to the map data, but since practically no other backend provides this level of detail it also required a few changes in our data model and API. * § Open Access/Content⠀➾ o ⚓ Omicron Limited ☛ Researchers_identify_'dancer'_as_a_new curiosity_style_in_Wikipedia_browsing⠀⇛ The team aims to explore the motivations behind Wikipedia browsing, examining whether users are driven by extrinsic factors, like work, or intrinsic curiosity, like personal interest. For something to affect all GNU/Linux systems that would have to be either a kernel issue or a sshd issue. The announcement included complaints about the lack of response of vendors and “And YES: I LOVE hyping the sh1t out of this stuff because apparently sensationalism is the only language that forces these people to fix”. He seems to have a different experience to me of reporting bugs, I have had plenty of success getting bugs fixed without hyping them. I just report the bug, wait a while, and it gets fixed. I have reported potential security bugs without even bothering to try and prove that they were exploitable (any situation where you can make a program crash is potentially exploitable), I just report it and it gets fixed. I was very dubious about his ability to determine how serious a bug is and to accurately report it so this wasn’t a situation where I was waiting for it to be disclosed to discover if it affected me. I was quite confident that my systems wouldn’t be at any risk. * § Web Browsers/Web Servers⠀➾ o ⚓ Simon Willison ☛ Mastodon_discussion_about_sandboxing_SVG_data⠀⇛ The winner for me turned out to be the humble tag. As far as we can see at this time, there is currently no news about Rocky Linux 9.5. Taking a longer-term view, AlmaLinux Kitten is derived from CentOS Stream 10, and it is an internal upstream of what will in time become AlmaLinux 10. APT29, also known as Cozy Bear, BlueBravo and Midnight Blizzard, is allegedly housed within Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). While desktop users are less likely to rely on integrated graphics than laptop users, it's still problematic for Intel to have such a major issue with its integrated graphics plaguing customers during Arrow Lake launch week. ╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛ ¶ Lines in total: 1818 ➮ Generation completed at 02:49, i.e. 15 seconds to (re)generate ⟲
