These federally mandated backdoors date back to a 1994 law, the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), that required phone companies to install wiretapping technology in their networks. In 2006, the FCC expanded this backdoor mandate to cover broadband internet companies. The proposed listen utility initiates network services by executing files named after the protocol and port they serve. This approach offers significant advantages over traditional Linux setups: per-user, per-port, and per-program allocation of ports, to be contrasted with the binary privileged/unprivileged model on Linux; enhanced security through process isolation; and network transparency for service scripts. We also detail the development of auxiliary tools and contributions such as a Go-based 9P2000.L FUSE client needed for container isolation, improvement to the p9ufs 9P2000.L server, and a network-transparent implementation of the finger protocol. We straighforwardly achieve a level of simplicity and security that is currently only achievable on Linux with complex configurations or not at all. The paper concludes with reflections on the challenges and limitations encountered in adapting Plan 9's models to the Linux platform, pointing out the inherent difficulties in reconciling Linux's legacy structures with Plan 9's more streamlined and network- native approach. * ⚓ Barry Kauler ☛ Finding_XBPS_to_be_very_frustrating⠀⇛ The XBPS package manager in Void Linux, and used in QV, is great, except when the database becomes broken. We want to give a huge thank you to ESET for sharing their findings with us—it’s collaboration like this that keeps the web a safer place for everyone. We’ve already released_a_fix for this particular issue, so when Firefox prompts you to upgrade, click that button. Within an hour of receiving the sample, we had convened a team of security, browser, compiler, and platform engineers to reverse engineer the exploit, force it to trigger its payload, and understand how it worked. During exploit contests such as pwn2own, we know ahead of time when we will receive an exploit, can convene the team ahead of time, and receive a detailed explanation of the vulnerabilities and exploit. At pwn2own 2024, we shipped a fix in 21 hours, something that helped us earn an industry award for fastest to patch. This gets us a long way, but what we really want to do is emulate the end-to-end firmware update of every real device we support. It’s not trivial (or quick) connecting hundreds of devices to a specific CI machine, and so for some time we’ve supported recording USB device enumeration, re-plug, firmware write, re–re-plug and re-enumeration. For fwupd_2.0.0 we added support for all sysfs-based devices too, which allows us emulate a real world NVMe disk doing actual ioctls() and reads() in every submitted CI job. Haskell’s polymorphism means that you sometime write a function that works across an enormous range of types, and are often left wondering “what do I actually call my variables?”. It is often the case that there’s nothing to say beyond “this variable is a Functor”, or “this variable is a monadic action”, and so a single-letter variable name is approprate. An unofficial and largely undocumented convention has emerged around these variable names, and so I wanted to write them all down in one place. It should go without saying that single-letter variable names are not always the answer. Like point-free style, it can sometimes obscures more than it helps and people get carried away with it. But when you have a highly polymorphic function and no good words to use, choosing the right letter can convey a surprising amount of meaning. Well, there is an easier solution, and in this post I want to summarise several methods that I have implemented in the smooth package for forecasting functions. In this post I will focus on the adam() function, although all of them work for es() and msarima() as well, and some of them work for other functions (at least as for now, for smooth v4.1.0). Most of the time these flame-wars offer little of value or less in terms of technical insight and the patter of angry voices fades away before it reaches the ears of the less online. But a recent one, which began when the maintainer of the SolidJS web development framework wrote a long and very angry- sounding blog post outlining why he didn’t think web components represented the future of web development, is a little bit less usual. Not because it has staying power. It’s fading away at the same steady pace as these things usually do. * sv/">Use nanoparquet instead of readr/CSV Parquet is interoperable between Python and R, fast to read+write, works well with databases, and stores complex data types (e.g., tibble listcols). By putting in a small amount of motivation towards the short-term goal of implementing some functionality, you suddenly end up with a much larger amount of motivation towards a long term investment in your own personal growth as a programmer. If we deliberately stay away from clever techniques when writing code, in order to avoid the need for skill when debugging, we dodge the lever and miss out on the improvement. We would then need other sources of motivation in order to grow as programmers, and if no such motivation appears, our abilities stagnate (or even deteriorate). The psychological concept of flow, somewhat simplified, can be used to visualise the process. Flow is when you are "fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity" (wikipedia), and it only occurs when the challenge that you are tackling matches your current level of skill. * ⚓ Qt ☛ [Proprietary]_LTS_Qt_6.5.7_Released⠀⇛ We have released Qt 6.5.7 LTS for [proprietary] license holders today. However, this abundance of choice can be overwhelming for newcomers. In the guide below, I discuss the best KDE Linux distros. Curious? Read on. Before exploring the distributions in particular, let’s first clarify what KDE is. Established in 1996, KDE is a graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix-like operating systems. It was named as a playful nod to the then-existing Common Desktop Environment (CDE) used in commercial Unix systems. KDE utilizes the Qt toolkit for creating user interfaces. In 2009, KDE underwent a rebranding, splitting into smaller projects: KDE Plasma (the desktop), KDE Gear (the apps), and KDE Frameworks (the libraries). This separation allows each component to progress independently. The most visible aspect is KDE Plasma, the desktop environment. Fortunately, there's md2gemini, which can handle the conversion process. Since Gemtext does not support inline links, the links in my posts have to be moved out of the paragraphs into separate lines. md2gemini offers multiple ways to that. Putting the links at the end of each paragraph and numbering the references inside the paragraph (like this [1]) seemed like the most readable way to me, so I chose that one. * ⚓ [Old] John Goerzen ☛ Adventures_Hosting_My_Site_On_Gemini_| www.complete.org⠀⇛ Well, I finally decided: it is time to host this site in Gemini. As noted in How this site is built, it is written in org-mode using org-roam, is part of the Small Web, and thus is a perfect fit….. right? I should begin with: I find Gemini to be really appealing. I can actually surf Geminispace as I did Gopherspace and the web decades ago. I don’t really surf the web anymore; I search the web for something specific, but the organic discovery of interesting corners is just lacking these days. So I’ve been enjoying Gemini. As one of the people that started preserving Gopher about 20 years ago, it fits right in with my interests. Herman Hollerith invented punched cards to process the 1890 U.S. census. Punched cards had a successful 65-year product life until they were largely replaced by magnetic tapes in the 1950s. In the mid-20th century, data was typically stored on a magnetic tape and dedicated to a specific application. A tape might, for example, be used by an inventory-control application. Periodically, maybe once a week, the inventory-control job would read the tape sequentially, applying updates as it went along and producing a new, updated inventory tape.
