trying to blame "Linux" for things that have nothing to do with it]⠀⇛ New Linux malware ‘Perfctl’ is targeting millions worldwide, mimicking system files to evade detection. This sophisticated malware compromises Linux servers, exploiting vulnerabilities for cryptomining and system resource hijacking. Cybersecurity researchers at Aqua Nautilus have discovered a new Linux malware that has targeted millions worldwide, exploiting over 20,000 misconfigurations. The malware has been lurking for some time, but recently attacked a Nautilus honeypot, providing an opportunity to detect and examine this threat that can put any Linux server at risk. * ⚓ Bleeping Computer ☛ Linux_malware_“perfctl”_behind_years-long cryptomining_campaign [Ed: Misidentifying the core issue; they focus on the OS, as if something existing on it is the fault of the kernel]⠀⇛ A Linux malware named "perfctl" has been targeting Linux servers and workstations for at least three years, remaining largely undetected through high levels of evasion and the use of rootkits. * ⚓ Hacker News ☛ New_Perfctl_Malware_Targets_Linux_Servers_for Cryptocurrency_Mining_and_Proxyjacking [Ed: Blaming "Linux" for stuff like bad PHP or people setting up systems to allow access]⠀⇛ Misconfigured and vulnerable Linux servers are the target of an ongoing campaign that delivers a stealthy malware dubbed perfctl with the primary aim of running a cryptocurrency miner and proxyjacking software. * ⚓ TechTarget ☛ Cryptomining_perfctl_malware_swarms_Linux_machines [Ed: But issue isn't the culprit here; that's like blaming Windows for people installing malware on it or Adobe Photoshop having holes.]⠀⇛ Aqua Security researchers believe that perfctl malware has infected thousands of Linux machines in the last three to four years and that countless more could be next. * ⚓ Dark Reading ☛ Near-'perfctl'_Fileless_Malware_Targets_Millions_of Linux_Servers [Ed: Misconfiguration, not "Linux"]⠀⇛ A multipurpose and mysterious malware dropper has been terrorizing Linux servers worldwide for years, infecting untold thousands of victims with cryptomining and proxyjacking malware. A fresh analysis has exposed its secrets — and a vast treasure trove of tens of thousands of exploit paths for compromising its targets. An update More of the same: * ⚓ Security_experts_claim_new_'Perfctl'_malware_could_pose_a_risk_to_any GNU/Linux_server⠀⇛ "Perfctl" malware targets any GNU/Linux server and serves as an extreme threat to all unsecured server operators. Microsoft reprinting these: * ⚓ Linux_systems_are_being_hit_by_a_wide-ranging_and_dangerous_new malware⠀⇛ Called Perfctl, the malware was recently spotted by cybersecurity researchers from Aqua Security, who claim it has been around since at least 2021, and has so far infected thousands of Linux endpoints. There are two main ways threat actors deploy Perfctl - either by exploiting thousands of possible misconfigurations, or by abusing a 10/10 vulnerability discovered last year. But the issue is not Linux, it's not new, and it's negligence: * ⚓ Thousands_of_Linux_systems_infected_by_stealthy_malware_since_2021⠀⇛ The malware has been circulating since at least 2021. It gets installed by exploiting more than 20,000 common misconfigurations, a capability that may make millions of machines connected to the Internet potential targets, researchers from Aqua Security said. It can also exploit CVE- 2023-33246, a vulnerability with a severity rating of 10 out of 10 that was patched last year in Apache RocketMQ, a messaging and streaming platform that’s found on many Linux machines. Feels more like a marketing campaign for Aqua at this point: * ⚓ New_Perfctl_Malware_Attacking_Millions_of_Linux_Servers⠀⇛ A sophisticated and elusive malware known as “Perfctl,” has been discovered targeting millions of Linux servers worldwide. Researchers at Aqua Nautilus have shed light on this malware, which has been actively exploiting over 20,000 types of misconfigurations in Linux servers over the past 3-4 years. Just repeating the same talking points: * ⚓ Linux_Systems_Vulnerable_to_perfctl_Malware⠀⇛ Hackread reports that millions of Linux servers around the world have been subjected to intrusions with the newly discovered perfctl malware during the past few years. Attacks commence with the targeting of vulnerable Apache RocketMQ servers with perfctl, which would then download the primary payload httpd for persistence and concealment before its execution to facilitate cryptocurrency mining and proxyjacking activities, according to an analysis from Aqua Nautilus. It's not new at all and it's not the fault of Linux. It's actually very old and due to misconfiguration mostly: * ⚓ Linux_systems_are_being_hit_by_a_wide-ranging_and_dangerous_new malware⠀⇛ Called Perfctl, the malware was recently spotted by cybersecurity researchers from Aqua Security, who claim it has been around since at least 2021, and has so far infected thousands of Linux endpoints. It offers services such as management of large distributed systems, data services, load balancing, transaction support, and network security. The application server is one part of a three-tier application, consisting of a graphical interface server, an application (business logic) server, and a database / transaction server. There are good reasons to deploy an application server in a corporate environment. At a high level, an application server enables updates and upgrades to applications to be distributed to all users. System administrators also benefit from the fact that changes to application configuration can take place centrally, which greatly simplifies technical support and ultimately the end user experience. Application servers also simplify user management, avoiding the need to set up and maintain user-management systems for applications. This type of software also enhances scalability and resource usage, and exposes business components via different deployment wrappers. * ⚓ cliphist_-_clipboard_history_manager_for_Wayland_-_LinuxLinks⠀⇛ cliphist is a clipboard history “manager” for Wayland. A neat, beautiful workaround for a pointless, unnecessary problem. Kernel bugs can happen, that's fine. The problem is, when someone is trying to create a beautiful Linux productivity setup as an alternative to Windows, and then they get held back by meaningless issues and annoying hardware-related snags, that journey becomes a hassle. And in this case, it's caused by something that 1) should have already been fixed 2) should never have happened in a home environment. Well, my fix is to simply blacklist the ipv6 kernel module. Disabling the protocol ain't enough. However, once you prevent the module from loading, the freezes go away. My desktop is back to being fast, elegant and stable, which is what I expect and demand if I'm ever to use Linux seriously. The new processor succeeds the Rockchip RK3588 octa-core Cortex-A76/A55 first announced in 2019, and also features a 128-bit LPDDR4/4x/5 memory interface, and a UFS 4.0 storage interface. That’s about all we know about the RK3688 right now, but we can also deduct it’s probably based on a new, yet-to-be-announced Arm Cortex-A7xx core, possibly named Cortex-A730 or Cortex-A735, because no Arm cores have been announced with the Armv9.3 architectures. The Arm Cortex-A725 CPU core unveiled last May still relies on Armv9.2, and I’d expect new Arm cores to be introduced within the next few months unless Rockchip made a mistake in the presentation slide above. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1348 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/10/05/Parabolic_A_Powerful_Tool_for_Downloading_Online_Media_on_Linu.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/10/05/Parabolic_A_Powerful_Tool_for_Downloading_Online_Media_on_Linu.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Parabolic: A Powerful Tool for Downloading Online Media on Linu⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Oct 05, 2024 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇Parabolic⦈_ This article will guide you through the features of Parabolic and provide step- by-step instructions on how to install it using Flathub, Snap, or by cloning the repository directly. Within these deliberations, I have also envisioned potential solutions to ensure that production systems could be migrated safely. My initial ideas involved treating time64 as a completely new Hey Hi (AI) with a new libdir and forced incompatibility between binaries. This ambitious plan faced two disadvantages. Firstly, it required major modification to various toolchains, and secondly, it raised compatibility concerns between Gentoo (and other distributions that followed this plan) and distributions that switched before or were going to switch without making similar changes. Effectively, it would not only require a lot of effort from us, but also a lot of convincing other people, many of whom probably don’t want to spend any more time on doing extra work for 32-bit architectures. This made me consider alternative ideas. One of them was to limit the changes to the transition period — use a libt32 temporary library directory to prevent existing programs from breaking while rebuilds were performed, and then simply remove them, and be left with plain lib like other distributions that switched already. In this post, I’d like to elaborate how I went about testing the feasibility of this solution. Please note that this is not a migration guide — it includes steps that are meant to detect problems with the approach, and are not suitable for production systems. * § Open Data⠀➾ o ⚓ Drew Breunig ☛ Wikidata_is_a_Giant_Crosswalk_File⠀⇛ Wikidata is Wikipedia’s structuralist younger brother. It’s contents are seemingly exhaustive, but rather than readable articles, Wikidata expresses itself with structured data. Pick a subject and check out it’s page; it’s like reading the back of a baseball card for, well, anything. And burried in those stats and metadata are external IDs: identifiers from other sites and systems, which we can use to grab more data and develop cross-platform applications. Wikidata has thousands of ‘em.
