I remember those early days well. Back in 2004, I made the switch from Red Hat Linux (before there was Fedora and after using it since 1997) to this upstart distribution and never looked back. Since then, I've used only Ubuntu or a Ubuntu-based distribution for my primary OS. With good reason. Ubuntu is as stable and user-friendly as an OS can be. And with a clockwork-like release scheduled, I can always count on when a new version is about to hit. Conflation processes are complicated affairs with many stages, conditionals, and comparison methods. Even then, humans might be needed to review and solve the most stubborn joins. Today we’re going to demonstrate a few different conflation methods, to illustrate the problem. The following is written for people with data processing or analysis experience, but little geospatial exposure. We’re currently experiencing a bit of a golden age in tooling and data for the geo-curious. It’s now possible to quickly assemble geo data and analyze it on your laptop, using freely available and easy-to-use tools. No complicated staging, no specialized databases, and (at least today) no map projection wrangling. * ⚓ [Old] BoringSQL ☛ We_need_to_talk_about_ENUMs⠀⇛ Designing a database schema, whether for a new application or a new feature, always raises a lot of questions. The choices you make can have a big impact on how well your database performs and how easy it is to maintain and scale. Whether you’re just getting started with PostgreSQL or consider yourself a seasoned pro, it’s easy to rely on old habits or outdated advice. In this article, I want to take a fresh look at one of those topics that often sparks debate: the use of ENUMs in PostgreSQL. * ⚓ [Old] BoringSQL ☛ How_not_to_change_PostgreSQL_column_type_| boringSQL⠀⇛ One of the surprises that comes with developing applications and operating a database cluster behind them is the discrepancy between practice and theory, development environment and the production. A perfect example of such a mismatch is changing a column type. * ⚓ Robert Haas ☛ PostgreSQL_Hacking_Workshop_-_October_2024⠀⇛ This month, I'll be hosting a discussion of Thomas Munro's 2024.pgconf.dev talk, Streaming I/O and vectored I/O. However, if you do want to attend, please sign up right away, because our first session is scheduled for this Thursday. * ⚓ Phil Eaton ☛ Build_a_serverless_ACID_database_with_this_one_neat_trick_ (atomic_PutIfAbsent)⠀⇛ Thanks to its simplicity, in this post we'll implement a Delta Lake-inspired serverless ACID database in 500 lines of Go code with zero dependencies. It will support creating tables, inserting rows into a table, and scanning all rows in a table. All while allowing concurrent readers and writers and achieving snapshot isolation. There are other critical parts of Delta Lake we'll ignore: updating rows, deleting rows, checkpointing the transaction metadata log, compaction, and probably much more I'm not aware of. There are various tools available; the most common ones are Docker, Buildah, Podman, and Kaniko. You need to have image build tools to pull down images from external registry, customize the images, and build new images with libraries or applications. These images then published to container registries and further used in Kubernetes platforms such as Red_Hat_OpenShift, EKS, AKS, etc. In this article, we'll be mainly talking about OpenShift, but the contents can be used for other platforms as well with little to no modifications. In most enterprises, especially where security, compliance, and operational consistency are paramount, image build processes are strictly governed due to control risks. I have seen organizations having a separate build infrastructure just to manage the image build process. On the other side, few organizations allow application teams to manage build infrastructure. In both the cases, the infrastructure needs to have any of the above listed tools available. It is very common that such tools are mostly installed on virtual machines (VMs) reserved just for container build processes. A system container is an instance of an operating system that also runs on a computer, along with the main operating system. A system container, instead, uses security primitives of the GNU/Linux kernel for the separation from the main operating system. The system container follows the lifecycle of a computer system. You can think of system containers as software virtual machines. An application container is a container that has an application or service. It follows the lifecycle of the application instead of a system. That is, here you start and stop the application instead of booting and shutting down a system. Incus supports Open_Container_Initiative_(OCI) images such as Docker images. When Incus launches an OCI image, it uses its own runtime, not Docker’s.
