However, it includes certain features that might not appeal to the typical desktop user. One example is the way Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, delivers some essential applications like the Firefox web browser and the Thunderbird email client. These are distributed as Snaps, a type of distro-agnostic software packaging similar to Flatpak that works across different Linux distributions. However, while Flatpak has become widely accepted as a standard within the Linux community, Snap is still mostly used within the Ubuntu ecosystem alone. The reasons for this are different; this is not the place to comment on them. We are here to show you how to install Thunderbird as a regular DEB package on your Ubuntu 24.04 LTS system. But that's almost entirely just due to a header file sync, which picked up the largish x86 feature flag cleanup and some other header file noise. If you ignore the tooling header updates, it's roughly one third filesystems (bcachefs dominates, but there's btrfs and netfs fixes too), one third drivers (gpu, networking, and misc), and one third 'the rest" (MM, arch updates, core networking, documentation, etc). But it all looks fairly normal. rc4 is bigger than either rc2 or rc3 were, but not hugely so, and it's actually a normal pattern, where it takes a while before people find some issues. So nothing feels all that odd. I have some travel coming up, so I hope things will start to calm down a bit. Here are my findings. * ⚓ University of Toronto ☛ A_downside_or_two_of_function_keyword_arguments (and_default_values)⠀⇛ Technically you can have keyword arguments without supporting optional arguments or default values, but I don't think very many languages do. The languages I've seen with this generally tend to make keyword arguments optional and then sometimes let you set a default value if no value is supplied (otherwise an unsupplied argument typically gets a zero value specific to its type or the language; for example I believe Emacs Lisp makes them all nil). * ⚓ James G ☛ How_to_implement_a_time-based_LRU_cache_in_Python⠀⇛ There are two caching strategies that are commonly used: time- based and Least Recently Used (LRU). You can combine them both to achieve a more desirable result. Let’s talk about both time-based and LRU caches, how they work, what properties they have, and when you may want to implement a hybrid time-based LRU cache. * ⚓ Tim Bradshaw ☛ Wild_pathnames_in_Common_Lisp⠀⇛ The underlying problem is that on many platforms pathnames which ‘look like’ they contain wildcards are perfectly legal pathnames to the filesystem. So, on Unix & related systems [foo].* is a legal filename. On these platforms wildcard handling is generally implemented in a library, or often in multiple semi-compatible libraries1. * ⚓ James G ☛ Introduction_to_consensus_modeling_in_Python⠀⇛ Consensus algorithms allow computer scientists and data analysts to answer a question based on information from several data sources. These data sources may be independent, or data taken from the same source but at different time frames. * ⚓ Alex Gaynor ☛ Safer_C++⠀⇛ I am an unrepentant advocate for migrating away from memory- unsafe languages (C and C++) to memory safe languages in security-relevant contexts. Many people reply that migrating large code bases to new languages is expensive, and we’d be better off making C++ safer. This is a reasonable response, after all there’s an enormous amount of C++ in the wild. Even on an incredibly aggressive timeline for replacing every line of C++ in the world with Rust or Swift or Go, we’ll have a lot of C++ attack surface for a long time. So even if you’re a memory-safe languages advocate, achieving a safer C++ is a worthwhile goal. * § Python⠀➾ o ⚓ James G ☛ Python_pattern:_Using_defaultdicts_to_initialise dictionaries⠀⇛ The collections.defaultdict Python dictionary automatically adds an empty value of the default type supplied whenever a new item is added to the dictionary. defaultdict dictionaries behave like a Python dictionary, except with the property that if a key doesn’t exist, a default value is added so that you can manipulate the value without checking for the presence of the key. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1092 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/08/19/Pulsar_1_120_Rolls_Out_with_Advanced_Code_Handling_Features.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/08/19/Pulsar_1_120_Rolls_Out_with_Advanced_Code_Handling_Features.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Pulsar 1.120 Rolls Out with Advanced Code Handling Features⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Rianne Schestowitz on Aug 19, 2024 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇Pulsar_1.120⦈_ Quoting: Pulsar 1.120 Rolls Out with Advanced Code Handling Features — The latest update to Pulsar, version 1.120, dubbed “Keeping it clean,” focuses on tidying up the codebase, refining features, and squashing bugs to ensure a smoother user workflow. Use Linux, BSD. — The default applications are a mix of Cinnamon, Arch and its underpinnings, including access to the AUR, and Hisham's selections. Cinnamon contributions include the Nemo file manager and its Actions Centre; the Pix photo viewer; xed text editor; the GNOME Terminal; and the Celluloid video player. Hisham has chosen Brave as the browser, Geary as the e-mail client, and the free version of OnlyOffice as the office suite. Also included are the Ulauncher application launcher; Vim, for those who prefer that sort of thing; Deluge for BitTorrent; Bleachbit (for the intrepid); and Exaile for music. Brave and OnlyOffice are intriguing choices, though Ulauncher and Geary aren't common, either. Brave seemed to work as it was supposed to, though it didn't seem any lighter than Firefox. I know OnlyOffice a little (I've worked my way through most office suites, free and paid, in a vain attempt to liberate myself from LibreOffice's annoyances), and it's fine, but not appreciably different from LibreOffice. Geary, thanks to Google's security witchcraft, wouldn't recognize the Gmail account I use for these reviews, so it was easier to set up a Brave progressive web app (PWA) and run Gmail through it. Ulauncher was a pleasant surprise, though I wish it was as easy to set up to access files and documents as it is on the Albert launcher. Two technologies that work together to improve your container workflow are RHEL system roles and the Red Hat Insights image builder. Recently, Insights image builder introduced the ability to define a first boot configuration script that gets run the first time a system boots up from an image. This first boot script can be utilized for a variety of use cases, including to configure a newly created host with RHEL system roles. In this article, I demonstrate how to use an Insights image builder first boot script to run the timesync, fapolicyd, journald, and cockpit system roles to configure several aspects of systems provisioned from the image. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1775 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/08/19/today_s_leftovers.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/08/19/today_s_leftovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ today's leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Aug 19, 2024 * ⚓ Linux Made Simple ☛ 2024-08-11_[Older]_Linux_Weekly_Roundup_#294⠀⇛ * § Debian Family⠀➾ o ⚓ Debian ☛ DebConf24_closes_in_Busan_and_DebConf25_dates announced⠀⇛ On Saturday 3 August 2024, the annual Debian Developers and Contributors Conference came to a close. So while you can pick from dozens of user-friendly distros that simplify the Linux experience, it remains entirely separate from Windows. That’s why Linux will never be a Windows clone. Now, be aware that there are developers out there who have tried to create Linux distros that copy the Windows user interface pixel-for- pixel (including visual assets like icons and animations). Both projects have a shady history, including selling license keys for free software, so we won't name them here. If you see someone out there making exact replications of Windows, you're safest staying away.
