Whatever makes them productive, or simply get the thing done. Tinkering is just a nuisance, a problem one needs to overcome to do the thing. The only thing which makes Linux popular is the opposite of what it was. Linux is no longer a free land, ruled by the masses. It went to bed with Big Tech, and stayed there. The moment of Linux is created by Valve and Steam. They made what thousands of open-source developers couldn’t - run the software, which people want to use. Many of them were machines from a company called Clevo, with each applying a different sticker on the back and swapping out the components under the hood. Many still do this, but a number are supplying their own custom hardware. I'm typing this on a StarLite MK IV from Star Labs, and I'm eyeing the newer StarLite, which is now a Surface-style tablet PC. I've owned a Librem 13 from Purism, which came with hardware kill switches before those were more common-place. These are all machines that, when I sit them down next to my wife's MacBook, don't look like relics from the past. Linux hardware has come a long way. Sometimes you buy a Linux PC to save yourself the headache of installing things yourself. Sometimes you buy one out of the goodness of your heart. Sometimes you buy one because, like with the Steam Deck, the device is just that good. Why just one? Many of us who have spent years in the community have forgotten how intimidating it can seem to a newcomer to the movement. But switching to free software isn't an all-or- nothing game. Saying no to one nonfree program in your life and swapping in an ethical replacement is still progress for the movement. At the same time, given the paradigm shift that using free software can be, sharing just one program will help your friend be introduced gradually. Remember that they may have plenty of new concepts to learn about already, as we can no longer take for granted that people readily understand concepts like an operating system, a kernel, and so on. We all have that first program that sparked our love and commitment to the movement. This year, we're inviting you to do the same for someone else. Join us by signing the pledge. It was so happy feeling to see them again. * § Mozilla⠀➾ o ⚓ Spidermonkey_Development_Blog:_SpiderMonkey_Newsletter_(Firefox 128-129)⠀⇛ Hello Everyone, It’s Matt here from the SpiderMonkey team, with another newsletter for you. I hope you’re enjoying summer/winter. The last heatwave where I am broke on Thursday evening, with a_dramatic_drop_in_temperatures_driven_by_the arrival_of_a_thunderstorm. Unfortunately for me, it seems to be back for round two this week. In SpiderMonkey land we’ve been hard at work on a number of things, but you’ll see from this abbreviated blog that we do tend to slow down a bit in the middle of the year as vacations build up. In June of this year Mozilla, in collaboration with Aalto University hosted the 102nd meeting of TC39 in Helsinki, Finland. I was actually able to attend this meeting in person, which was really interesting to me. On the one hand, seeing how JavaScript is standardized from such an intimate viewpoint was extremely eye-opening. While companies are still competing in relevant markets, and still use standards as strategic tools – and yes, sometimes they behave badly – both the culture and processes of these bodies are geared heavily towards collaboration and cooperation. In part, that’s due to the history of the Internet and the Web. Both were projects born from collaborative, non- commercial efforts in research environments that reward cooperation. Early on, these attitudes were embedded into the cultures of both the IETF and W3C: Web Services was an anomaly because corporate interests brought that effort from the ‘outside.’ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 1341 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/07/17/Proprietary_Software_and_Misc_Leftovers.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/07/17/Proprietary_Software_and_Misc_Leftovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Proprietary Software and Misc. If Linux can be said to belong to anyone, it belongs to everyone. It is for this reason that it is in everyone’s interests to collaborate on the project. If it belonged to someone or some entity alone, especially if that sense of ownership is rooted in justifying that entity’s sole right to effectively capitalize on the software, the dynamic breaks down and the incentive for the “third-party” class to participate is gone. It doesn’t work. That said, clearly the proponents of these new source-available movements feel otherwise. And, to be clear, I wish them well. I respect the right for authors of software to distribute it under whatever terms they wish.2 And, for my part, I do believe that source-available is a clear improvement over proprietary software, even though these models fall short of what I perceive as the advantages of open source. However, for these movements to have a shot at success, they need to deeply understand these dynamics and the philosophical and practical underpinnings of the free and open source movements. However, it is very important to me that we do not muddy the landscape of open source by trying to reform, redefine, or expand our understanding of open source to include movements which contradict this philosophy. My well-wishes are contingent on any movements which aim to compete with open source stopping short of calling themselves open source. This is something I appreciate about the fair source and post-open movements – both movements explicitly disavow the label of open source. If you want to build something new, be clear that it is something new – this is the ground rule. At the heart of this tension lies a quiet request that has stirred not-so-quiet ripples across the open source landscape: SUSE has formally asked openSUSE to discontinue using its brand name. Richard Brown, a key figure within the openSUSE project, shared insights into the discussions that have unfolded behind closed doors. Despite SUSE’s request’s calm and respectful tone, the implications of not meeting it could be far-reaching, threatening the symbiotic relationship that has benefited both entities over the years. Let’s face it: SUSE has been more than just a namesake for openSUSE; it has actively provided resources and support far beyond what it would ordinarily need for its business operations. When I was still testing software for my supper, I’d just quietly work all day and then go home. I’m going to toot my own horn a little: I was fast and good at finding the most critical bugs. Nobody could touch me. But, critically, nobody in leadership knew it. When I wanted to move up, I had a hard time showing that I was ready. I needed to make sure my work was visible, so that leaders could see what I was capable of. * § Databases⠀➾ o ⚓ The Register UK ☛ MySQL_9_underwhelms_some_DB_experts_in_the community⠀⇛ MySQL was originally developed by David Axmark and Michael Widenius, with the first release dating back to 1995. The founding Swedish company, MySQL AB, was bought by Sun Microsystems in 2008, while Sun was itself subsumed by Oracle in 2009. Immediately after that takeover, Michael – or "Monty" – Widenius forked MySQL to launch MariaDB, hiring a group of the MySQL development team at the same time. MariaDB has since been publishing its MySQL iteration, particularly as a managed service DBaaS. * § BSD⠀➾ o ⚓ FreeBSD ☛ Navigating_FreeBSD’s_New_Quarterly_and_Biennial_Release Schedule⠀⇛ FreeBSD users, prepare for a smoother, more predictable system management experience! We’re excited to announce changes to the FreeBSD release schedule and support periods. These updates will improve your overall experience, enhance system security, and streamline maintenance. Key changes: 1. Predictable and More Frequent Release Schedule: Expect a new minor release approximately every quarter. This means more frequent updates and a steady stream of improvements. 2. Shorter Support Periods: Starting with FreeBSD 15.x, stable branches will now be supported for four years after the .0 release, reduced from the previous five-year period. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 2249 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/07/17/today_s_leftovers.shtml Gemini version at https://tuxmachines.org/n/2024/07/17/today_s_leftovers.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ today's leftovers⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Jul 17, 2024 * ⚓ Pi My Life Up ☛ Installing_FFmpeg_on_Ubuntu⠀⇛ FFmpeg is an incredibly powerful set of libraries and programs for handling video, audio, and many other multimedia formats. This software library has become a core part of numerous pieces of software, including YouTube video processing, the video player VLC, and many more. It boasts support for almost every known audio and video codec and even offers hardware decoding and encoding support. Using this library on your Ubuntu device, you can process your videos or audio. For example, you can use FFmpeg to transcode a video from one format to another. It can even extract the audio layer from videos. While we won’t cover how to use this software library, you will find it incredibly useful if you ever have to deal with video or audio files. * ⚓ Pi My Life Up ☛ Setting_up_an_SSH_Honeypot_on_the_Raspberry_Pi_with sshesame⠀⇛ One of the cool things about this honeypot is that you can quickly get an idea of how an attacker might approach your system and the commands they might issue over SSH once they gain access. Since this is a honeypot, any command an attacker uses never actually occurs, and the sshesame daemon fakes the responses. * ⚓ Pi My Life Up ☛ Get_your_Public_IP_Address_using_Curl_on_Linux⠀⇛ We can use curl to get your public IP address by connecting it to a service that outputs the IP you connected with. Organize workers. Only ten percent of American workers today are union members. Organize the other 90 percent. That is the ladder necessary to climbing out of this political quicksand. “Hey I thought we were talking about elections and now you’re talking about something different.” Organizing more workers is the path to political power for unions. Labor organizing first, everything else downstream of that. The reason why Democrats have often felt free to take unions for granted is not just because Democrats are disappointing; it’s because unions are weak. When you add millions of new workers into the pool of organized labor, you make organized labor stronger, and eventually that strength forces politicians to listen, because politics is about how much power you are able to wield. The solution, in other words, is not begging politicians to be nice to us. It is getting strong enough to make demands that must be obeyed, because we have the people. I wrote a book about this. * ⚓ Dan Langille ☛ Where’s_my_backup?⠀⇛ That means the FreshPorts backup is more than a day old, and it should have been refreshed by now. * ⚓ University of Toronto ☛ People_at_universities_travel_widely_and unpredictably⠀⇛ Every so often, people make the entirely reasonable suggestion that if one day you see a particular person log in from locally and then a few days later they're logging in from half way around the world, perhaps you should investigate.
