AMD's Early Support For RDNA 4 "GFX12" GPUs Will Put The Company's Next-Gen Hardware In A Much Better Position Compared to Alternatives It looks like AMD has seen a sudden change in approach for Linux, as when it comes to next-gen support, the company was quite slow compared to its competitors. Sometimes, initial support dropped in only months away from an official launch, however with the upcoming RDNA 4 GPU lineup which is marked as GFX12, AMD plans on catching things up. In particular that fact that commit 936e114a245b6 ("iomap: update ki_pos a little later in iomap_dio_complete") is not in stable causes that file position is not updated after direct IO write and thus we direct IO writes are ending in wrong locations effectively corrupting data. The subtle detail is that before this commit if ->end_io handler returns non-zero value (which the new ext4 ->end_io handler does), file pos doesn't get updated, after this commit it doesn't get updated only if the return value is < 0. The commit got merged in 6.5-rc1 so all stable kernels that have 91562895f803 ("ext4: properly sync file size update after O_SYNC direct IO") before 6.5 are corrupting data - I've noticed at least 6.1 is still carrying the problematic commit. I’ve been following the developments in the Phoenix Framework for the last five years, deeply intrigued by its evolution (I even went so far as to write a blog post about its strengths a few years ago). It is a solid piece of Perl software powering a lot of modern Perl code. It allows for very expressive definition of object attributes. This expresiveness comes at a cost, nicely explained by Curtis "Ovid" Poe in his blog post. In short: it is not immediately obvious what is the purpose of an attribute and you have to look at the option list to get the idea. In addition to that, the attributes become very verbose if you want to nail their behavior exactly right. To solve this, you just install MooseX::Extended and enjoy new param and field, right? Sort of... The module does a lot of things, has a lot of dependencies and only works with Moose. If you often use Moo instead of Moose, you will have to find a Moo-specific module for this, and the API will likely be different. This is the exact issue solved by Mooish:: AttributeBuilder. It is a zero-dependency, module- agnostic helper for Moose family of modules letting you build your attributes more easily and give them meaning. It's not by any means a replacement of MooseX::Extended. On the contrary - it focuses on a very narrow scope of features and strives to deliver them for every Moose- compatible module on CPAN. o ⚓ Perl ☛ Perl_Advent_Calendar_2023:_Introduction_to_App::Timer⠀⇛ As you all know I have handful of distributions available on MetaCPAN. A caveat again: these observations are just from reading the code; I haven’t run these past the MinorMS authors yet, so any of these details might be misunderstandings. The MinorMS nursery consists of pages, each of which is 256 kB, unless huge-page mode is on, in which case they are 2 MB. The total default size of the nursery is 72 MB by default, or 144 MB if pointer_compression is off. There can be multiple threads allocating into the nursery, but let’s focus on the main_allocator, which is used on the main thread. Nursery allocation is bump-pointer, whether in a MinorMS page or scavenger semi-space. Bump-pointer regions are called linear allocation buffers, and often abbreviated as Lab in the source, though the class is LinearAllocationArea. If the current bump-pointer region is too small for the current allocation, the nursery implementation finds another one, or triggers a collection. For the MinorMS nursery, each page collects the set of allocatable spans in a free list; if the free-list is non-empty, it pops off one entry as the current and tries again. Otherwise, MinorMS needs another page, and specifically a swept page: a page which has been visited since the last GC, and whose spans of unused memory have been collected into a free- list. There is a concurrent sweeping task which should usually run ahead of the mutator, but if there is no swept page available, the allocator might need to sweep some. * § Open Hardware/Modding⠀➾ o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ When_Is_A_6502_Not_Quite_A_6502?⠀⇛ We all know that fake chips are a risk when it comes to buying parts on eBay or from Chinese markets such as AliExpress. Some software will only accept name constraints on intermediate CA certificates, so then you create an intermediate certificate with the same constraints as your root certificate; it should also have the same validity period as your root certificate (or as long a validity period as you expect to need your CA for). At this point, you throw away the CA root certificate's private key, so no one can make any more intermediate certificates. This insures an attacker can't create a new intermediate certificate without name constraints and then issue certificates from it that will be accepted by older Chrome versions and other things that ignore root CA name constraints. * ⚓ Manuel Matuzović ☛ What_the_slot?⠀⇛ Web Components offer nifty features for creating components using JavaScript, CSS, and HTML.
