Web Browsers and Feed Readers: Orion, Opera, and RSS Still Powerful

• OMG Ubuntu ☛ Orion for GNU/Linux beta updated with private browsing and link previews

  Kagi has released a new beta of Orion for Linux, a WebKitGTK-based port of its macOS browser. Orion for GNU/Linux v0.4.1 builds on the v0.3.0 public beta, released in March, by adding more features available on its macOS and iOS versions. Private windows, a working (if bare-bones) download manager and a toolbar overflow menu that you can use to keep buttons out of sight without making them inaccessible are among those now included and functional in the native GNU/Linux port. Orion’s link preview feature also makes its way over.

  Opera, the free Chromium based web browser, released new stable 134 version a few days ago. The new Opera version updated its Chromium base platform to the previous 150 stable release. And, it finally makes the Vertical Tabs feature available for all users.

  But I love what it does. I love how it ties the Web together. And I love how it does it: just a resource, at a URL, that the subscriber can hit as frequently, or not, as they like.

• Unstory ☛ They love RSS

  RSS is plumbing. A transport format. XML with angle brackets and escaped HTML and a version attribute and the CDATA hack. You don't love it. Your software parses it for you, and you never open the file. You never see the escaping, and you never deal with one misplaced whitespace that breaks the whole document. HTML is forgiving. Browsers render garbage. XML is not. One character and the feed is dead. The person with the heart in their footer would not survive writing one item by hand. Their love is for the club, not the file. It's standard flag overlay. The announcement replaces the doing.
