Highlights of Tails 7.0 include a Debian 13 “Trixie” base and a kernel from the long-term supported Linux 6.12 LTS series from the upstream Debian release, the latest GNOME 48 desktop environment by default featuring GNOME Console as default terminal emulator and GNOME Loupe as default image viewer.
Tails 7.0 ships with many updated components, including Tor 0.4.8.17, Mozilla Thunderbird 128.13 ESR, OnionShare 2.6.3, Kleopatra 24.12, KeePassXC 2.7.10, GIMP 3.0.4, Inkscape 1.4, Audacity 3.7.3, and Electrum 4.5.8. For Inkscape, Tails now skips the onboarding.

Tails 7.0, the privacy-focused Linux OS, arrives with Debian 13 and GNOME 48
Tails 7.0 has just arrived, offering a refreshed version of the privacy-focused operating system built on Debian 13 “Trixie” and GNOME 48 “Bengaluru.”
The OS is faster, core applications have been updated, and hardware support expanded, giving users who depend on Tails for anonymity additional tools and an overall nippier performance.
Tails now uses zstd compression instead of xz for its USB and ISO images, cutting boot times by around 10 to 15 seconds on most systems.
The installation image is about 10 percent larger as a result, but few people will complain about sacrificing a little extra disk space in exchange for faster loading.
The developers warn that poor-quality USB sticks can still slow down performance, so make sure you choose a decent one.

New Release: Tails 7.0

Dedication
Tails 7.0 is dedicated to the memory of Lunar (1982–2024). Lunar was a traveling companion for Tails, a Tor volunteer, Free Software hacker, and community organizer.
Lunar has always been by our side throughout Tails' history. From the first baby steps of the project that eventually became Tails, to the merge with Tor, he's provided sensible technical suggestions, out-of-the-box product design ideas, outreach support, and caring organizational advice.
Outside of Tor, Lunar worked on highly successful Free Software projects such as the Debian project, the Linux distribution on which Tails is based, and the Reproducible Builds project, which helps us verify the integrity of Tails releases.
