Apple Inc ☛ Using alternative browser engines in the European Union
iOS 17.4 introduces new capabilities that let iOS apps use alternative browser engines — browser engines other than WebKit — for dedicated browser apps and apps providing in-app browsing experiences in the EU. To use an alternative browser engine in your app, you’ll need to request the Web Browser Engine Entitlement (for browser apps that want to use alternative browser engines) or the Embedded Browser Engine Entitlement (for apps that provide in-app browsing experiences that want to use alternative browser engines).
Apple will provide authorized developers access to technologies within the system that enable critical functionality and help developers offer high-performance modern browser engines. These technologies include just-in-time compilation, multiprocess support, and more.
However, as browser engines are constantly exposed to untrusted and potentially malicious content and have visibility of sensitive user data, they are one of the most common attack vectors for bad actors. To help keep users safe online, Apple will only authorize developers to implement alternative browser engines after meeting specific criteria and who commit to a number of ongoing privacy and security requirements, including timely security updates to address emerging threats and vulnerabilities.

The New Leaf Journal ☛ On Google Chrome’s New AI Features
Google Chrome is the most-used computer web browser by a wide margin. I do not use it. I prefer open source non-Google solutions – using a heavily configured Firefox as my primary desktop browser and Firefox-based Mull on mobile devices while using Brave, a Chromium-fork, as a secondary browser on both computers and mobile. But just because I do not use Chrome does not mean that I do not hear what is happening through the grapevine. I came across Google’s announcement that it is bestowing upon its Chrome browser 3 new generative AI features (HT to TechCrunch). The first two features, using AI to organize tabs and using AI to create themes, are dumb but inoffensive – as in I would not use them if I was somehow forced to use Chrome, but people who do use them are only dangers to themselves. The third feature, however – “Get help drafting things on the web” – is cause for concern.
