Unity Technologies Destroys Its Goodwill With Developers
This has been a banner year for once-beloved brands crushing their own value. At Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., newish CEO David Zaslav inexplicably removed the HBO from HBO Max, confounding users. Elon Musk’s destruction of Twitter is too depressing to think about. And this week, Unity Technologies Inc. CEO John Riccitiello zapped any remaining customer goodwill for his company with the disastrous rollout of a widely reviled new policy.
Unity is the company behind a suite of tools and technology, called the Unity Engine, that helps people make video games. It has long enjoyed a reputation for being user friendly and well suited for independent developers — especially in contrast to its chief rival, Unreal Engine, which tends to be a better fit for bigger, more expensive games. The long list of games developed on Unity includes indie hits like Among Us, Hollow Knight and Cuphead.
