Linux Rising: Steam Usage Surpasses macOS for Gaming
We have reached a nice little milestone in the adoption of Linux on Steam. Over the years, gaming on Linux has consistently risen thanks to the introduction of the likes of Wine, Proton, and SteamPlay.

Linux surpasses the Mac among Steam gamers
Apple's macOS has been the second most popular operating system on the Steam game distribution platform for a long time, but that has now changed. Linux has surpassed macOS for the number two spot, according to Steam's July user hardware survey.

Breaking Barriers: Linux Outranks macOS on the Steam Platform
Historically, Linux has been regarded primarily as an operating system for servers, developers, and tech enthusiasts, with gaming as an afterthought. Compatibility issues, limited game libraries, and a lack of support from major game developers marred its reputation.
However, in recent years, Linux’s gaming capabilities have radically transformed.
Efforts to create gaming-specific distributions and advancements in compatibility layers like Proton, developed by Valve, have paved the way for more games to run smoothly on Linux systems.

Linux overtakes Macs on Steam thanks to the Steam Deck
No, Macs have never been a serious gamer’s first choice. But when even Linux-based systems are climbing past Apple’s computers on Steam’s hardware list, you start to wonder.
Steam’s monthly hardware report shows that more gamers are using Linux devices than Apple Macs, to the tune of 1.96 versus 1.84 percent (the vast majority of course run Windows PCs). The explanation? Probably Valve’s own Steam Deck gaming handheld. The breakout device runs on Valve’s custom Linux-based Steam OS and intensely marketed (and praised) over the past year.
